Sun Valley Resort Joins the Fire Brigade

By Carolyn Clark

If you are a true news junkie, like I am, you’ve been watching in horror as wild fires ravage the western United States. The Beaver Creek blaze, sparked by lightning nearly two weeks ago outside Sun Valley, Idaho has incinerated more acreage than the city of Manhattan. On Tuesday, the 1200 plus firefighters attacking the blaze turned a corner and were able to move from a defensive position to a ground offensive.

Sun Valley, while notable for the celebrities that have respite luxury homes in the area, is also home to the Sun Valley Resort and many full time residents. As an avid snowboarder, Sun Valley is bookmarked as one of my favorites. The runs on Bald Mountain are simultaneously challenging and breathtaking - offering up opportunities to consume the incomparable wonders of Mother Nature’s work in Idaho while breaking a sweat.

As a professional in the meetings and industry, the Sun Valley Resort is bookmarked as “special”. Recent events have only elevated my opinion of this one-of-a-kind destination.  While the fire rages on, the resort has joined the firefighting brigade and turned on their water cannons on the ski hill, normally used to make snow in the winter, in order to keep grass and trees moist.

Monday they upped the ante by reducing this Saturday’s general admission to their infamous Sun Valley Ice Show to FREE [and yes, the resort is open and has not been damaged by the fire.] In return they are encouraging patrons to pass on the generosity with a donation to the Wildland Firefighter Foundation – an organization that provides emergency support services to the families of firefighters, injured or killed in the line of duty.

Sadly, in the short term, the Beaver Creek Fire will have a negative effect on the local economy however Sun Valley is a very special place. The community will be back - stronger than ever.

Check out Sun Valley Resort’s YouTube video – and if you’d like to join the resort in supporting the families of the brave firefighters you can do so here.
